Building an Ecosystem of Compassionate Communities for Living and Dying Well through Volunteer Activities: Lampang Compassionate Community
By Sutheelak Ladpala, Project Leader of Lampang Compassionate Community
The Lampang Compassionate Community follows a practice-based approach to strengthen collaboration between the healthcare sector and local communities. This involves building partnerships with local stakeholders, offering health and death literacy. This project recognises that learning about illness, dying, and grief should not be limited to those currently facing such situations. Instead, it should be embraced as a shared learning process that contributes to a supportive ecosystems, enabling individuals and communities to live and die well.

A compassionate community ecosystem that supports living and dying well is characterised by:
- Open-mindedness and understanding in the context of illness, death, and grief as natural parts of life.
- Learning and preparation for facing illness, dying, and loss.
- Generosity and support emotionally, socially, and physically for those who are ill, dying, and their families.
- Honest and open communication about wishes and care needs at the end of life, including access to appropriate palliative care
- Healing activities and rituals that reflect the community’s beliefs and values, supporting both those who are grieving and those who have passed away.
Creating an ecosystem for a compassionate community is essential in today’s society, where everyone will face illness or loss at some point. Such an ecosystem helps ensure that no one faces these experiences alone.
The Lampang Compassionate Community in Action
Lampang’s model demonstrates how to build such an ecosystem through volunteer activities that foster happiness, care, and connection. Since 2019, volunteers have supported patients and families in hospital and home visits.
In December 2025, a public volunteer event was organised to make bunny dolls for children receiving care at Lampang Hospital. Twenty-five volunteers participated on 10 December, including young people, working adults, families, and parents of children with special needs.
This event not only brought joy to the hospitalised children but also helped strengthen community bonds. Participants came from diverse backgrounds and were driven by various personal motivations. The simple act of crafting bunny dolls became a meaningful shared experience that nurtured human connection and a strong sense of community.
The event took place at Sao Jindarat Library (ห้องสมุดเสาจินดารัตน์), a private library that partnered with the Compassionate Community project. This space became a hub for learning, idea-sharing, and creative expression. It served as a public venue where community members could connect, explore, and contribute, reinforcing the community’s sense of ownership in promoting compassionate care.

From Small Team to Expanding Network
The Lampang Compassionate Community began as a small team and gradually expanded into a growing network of volunteers who promote self-care and mutual support. At the heart of this approach is a simple belief:
Care does not always have to come from healthcare professionals
Volunteers can play a vital role in reminding others that both life and death hold meaning. One example is the creation of “elephant hand-in-hand” dolls, which were given to patients as tokens of hope, love, and solidarity. These heartfelt gifts reflect the community’s compassion and generosity, helping to foster a sense of harmony and connection.
Learning Through Doing
Activities like these raise awareness about the circle of care, death literacy, and emotional preparedness. They help people accept that illness and death are natural parts of life, both for themselves and for their loved ones, and that care from the community can be a powerful source of comfort. Volunteers also benefit deeply from these experiences. Making dolls, sharing stories, and delivering gifts becomes a meaningful process of healing and self-reflection. These activities offer a safe space for emotional expression, active listening, and connection, helping to nurture empathy and emotional growth, which are integral elements of compassionate communities ecosystems. Beyond joy and connection, volunteers also gain new skills. These small but meaningful acts of kindness strengthen both the individual and the community as a whole. Volunteering is not only about helping others; it is about learning how to support each other in our own capacities. Every small contribution matters and sustains the ongoing work of the Lampang Compassionate Community.
Participating in community activities is also a chance to learn how to cope with illness, support the bereaved, and embrace mortality. By sharing knowledge and lived experience, the community becomes more capable and confident in caring for both themselves and others.

A Future Rooted in Compassion
The Lampang model focuses on nurturing emotional wellbeing and resilience in the community through creative volunteer work. Everyone has a role to play in shaping a more compassionate society, one that supports one another through hardship while also fostering joy, learning, and personal growth rooted in compassion.
Creating compassionate ecosystems for living and dying well doesn’t only benefit patients and families. It brings happiness and strength to the whole community. When we recognise the value of life and relationships, and learn to live alongside illness and death, we lay the foundation for a strong, caring, and sustainable society. We invite everyone to help build a more compassionate and inclusive society by volunteering and supporting one another.
